What does neutering/spaying do to a dog?

The procedure to spay a female is the removal of the uterus and ovaries, and neutering (also known as castration) is the removal of the testes from the scrotal sac of a male. Our experienced veterinarians perform this surgery regularly with minimal surgical risk and post-operative pain. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and is considered day surgery, meaning your pet will be home with you the same evening. Our complimentary phone assessments and recheck appointments ensure your pet is recovering well!

Why is it important to neuter/spay my dog?

Spaying and neutering your pet not only prevents unwanted litters, but it also has many health benefits. Spaying female dogs and cats prevent a heat cycle. It eliminates the chance of cystic ovaries and severe uterine infections and reduces the chance of breast cancer. Neutering males decreases prostate disease and testicular cancer. It reduces urine odour and helps prevent spraying. It also lessens their desire to roam and fight, increasing the chance of injury.

When should I neuter/spay my cat?

Generally, this procedure is done at around 6 months of age. Spays and neuters can be safely performed on adult pets and even those who are much older.
